Sustainable Office Design Seminar on the Agenda

Office transformation specialists Morgan Lovell have organised a seminar to give the inside track on sustainable workplaces.

Aimed at facilities managers and property professionals – as well as business leaders looking to update their office interior – the event offers the latest advice on green workplaces.

Taking place at Morgan Lovell’s London headquarters in Noel Street, Soho – the seminar covers practical ideas and tips to incorporate into future office design, illustrated by real examples of green workplaces in practice.

Adrian Norman of Morgan Lovell – one of the few office designers in the UK to be accredited by both the BRE and the US Green Building Council – will give expert advice on realistic low-cost office design ideas that can help make the workplace more green and sustainable.

He’ll also discuss sustainable product specification and explore where government support for green working environments is potentially available.

Then, a real life case study will be presented by Kerrie Culff from publishers Egmont UK, who will share her experience of going ‘green’ in the office and what it has meant to her company.

The seminar finishes with a tour of Morgan Lovell’s headquarters – an environment which has achieved the highest BREEAM fit out environmental assessment score in the UK to date.

Andrew Bradley, managing director of Morgan Lovell in London, said: “The seminar offers real, applicable advice that can be incorporated into today’s office design projects.”

The seminar takes place on Wednesday, 9 July. Two sessions are being held, one in the morning and again in the afternoon.

Sustainable Trade Show Displays

Go green is the new and attractive agenda nowadays. Companies are more inclined towards adopting novel ways to conduct eco friendly and sustainable business activities leading to reduce the waste materials and to make the earth greener and healthier. If you are into trade show business then going for sustainable trade show displays is the best option. Some of the points to be kept in mind while undertaking the green agenda include:

?    Renewable materials- You should make use of eco-friendly, bio degradable and renewable sources of products and materials as this will help in eliminating the harmful and unnecessary waste and emissions. You can make use of bamboo cabinets and counters instead of other usual materials used in the trade shows.

?    Recycled materials- You should also make use of those materials which can be recycled again. Hence this practice will save your money. You can make use of materials like soda bottles in walls and fabrics and vehicle tires in the creation of flooring. You can also use aluminum as a material for your sustainable trade show displays.

?    Energy saving features- Instead of using excessive print materials and DVDs, you can use Green Banner Stands and metal halide lighting. You can also make use of fuel cells and solar panels that convert convention center lighting into electricity.

?    Non-toxic and low emitting substances- Such Sustainable Trade Show Displays substances should be taken into use for your trade show displays.

Usually trade shows are one of the ways to attract millions of people. This gives you a opportunity to view your products and services to them however if you associate the green symbol with all your products and services then people will find you credible and reliable. Generally green trade shows include pop up display, eco-friendly exhibits and green banners Eco Friendly Exhibits. Some of the other biodegradable and recycle materials which you can use in your sustainable trade show displays include aluminum, graphics on a fabric material, renewable yarn, cardboard, eco friendly foam board and recycled PET plastic.

Some people think that by going green in their trade shows displays they would not be able to give their booths a magnificent look. However the truth is that biodegradable materials can make your displays booths more attractive and artistic. One can also carry some reincarnation program to reduce the volume of retired exhibit materials reaching landfills and decreasing the release of greenhouse gases and carcinogens.

Modern Eco-Sustainable Industrial Processing

The industrial process produces a lot of garbage. Very often these processes are highly toxic or in any case not sustainable. It is just from the industry sector that comes most pollution.

Among community regulations, the Kyoto protocol, the warning for the global climate change, also the enterprises slowly have to conform to minimum standard. They can’t pretend nothing is happening anymore. This is the real challenge of this millennium. Sustainable economy is centered on a sustainable development model. This kind of economy, still unfortunately not enough developed, provide for society development being pursued able to respect the environment and use sources at our disposal to allow them regenerating. This way, also future generations will have the chance to use these resources. Unfortunately this concept has been understood too late from society, so now we are very backward for what concerns this field of development.

But there are also many enterprises that are moving to change this state of things.
The increasing market competition obliges operators to focus on product quality, without increasing costs and production efficiency, also and especially in the light of new European regulations. This is just why always more enterprises are focusing on innovation and research of new materials and new equipments.

A very important sector for the ecology is for example the one of industrial grinders. Industrial grinders can be used to reduce the volume of processing waste of: cumbersome plastic materials (bins, boxes, bumpers etc.), paperboards, wood, packaging, fruit shells and stones, leather and hide waste, bark, aluminum and steel cans, car tires, branches, and other. These machines are essential for the shredding and waste management, new technologies minimize the contribution of labor input for the loading and unloading of the shredder and the facilitation of all operations of waste recycling.

Other machines very important in this sense are also the waste compactors. The compactors are, to date, the best solution for anyone who wants to manage in a simple, secure and independent way the collection of waste. These machines are technologically advanced but very common to use, and make the disposal of waste and their recycling in particular, easier and faster.

But not just in this industry sector, in all sectors, companies aim to the design and creation of modern industrial machinery and new industrial processing that respect the environment or people, from mixers to pumps, to powder coating instead of spraying coating machines, to sustainable products pointing to a modern economic sustainable development plan. In the last years, so, we watched the birth of several innovations in this field, the creation of new machines and new technologies.

From innovative technologies for waste management to the creation of new machinery to respect the environment and of new processes that don’t harm environment or people, this is this is certainly the way forward in the future. Also, and especially at a time of severe economic crisis, to get out quickly from this moment of impasse, it is essential to continue to invest in research and development. Because it is precisely on this front that we can and must compete on the world market, not get so outdated on productions, but by innovating and offering products and services always at the forefront.

Green Sustainability- The answer to economic Recovery?

In the weeks it took for the global recession to turn from an alien concept to a reality for millions of households and businesses throughout the UK, the amount of coverage given to ‘Green’ issues would suggest a significant change in the public perception.

Environmental issues have long been greeted with anything from malaise to contempt in the popular press as journalists try and find new angles on a very simple hypothesis- ‘we are destroying our planet’. Indeed an emerging optimistic argument would suggest that the earth is in a voluntary cycle of warming and humans are flattering themselves by thinking they can make a difference- one way or the other.

However with national governments straining under the weight of bail-out debts and businesses unable to access vital credit another crucial ingredient has been added to the environmental broth- cost. It is suddenly patently obvious that global financial systems can no longer function on there current practices, regulation needs to be tightened, risk takers need to be held to account and sustainability must replace boom and bust.

This has been recognised by the Obama administration who have ring-fenced $150 billion dollars in green energy recognising that in order to reduce cost they must start at the beginning with energy cost and sustainability. Although short term costs maybe higher particularly in replacement and development, the US government recognises that the fastest way to recover from a recession is not to weather the storm but to change and adapt, using the gale-force winds to excel.

But is not just global politics where sustainable decisions are made, its in the households and businesses across the UK who recognise that now, more than ever, is the time to switch to a more sustainable way of life, simple things like proper insulation and swapping your light bulbs for energy saving bulbs. These easy steps will not conquer the global recession on their own, but it will help you save those valuable pounds that are so important in the current climate.

It is easy to become depressed watching the news or reading the paper hearing the constant themes of unemployment, reduced output and increased taxes however unless we learn from the this recession that sustainability, both financial and environmental is paramount in our global recovery it will have all been in vain.

Sustainable Health

What is Sustainable Health?
Sustainable health is a personal commitment to maintaining and taking responsibility for your own health, through preventative (proactive) means.

•    This means not only having regular exercise, and taking care of what we eat, but also maintaining a healthy and balanced state of mind.

For 4,500 years, Indian Aryuvedic medicine has taught us that illnesses are caused through an unhealthy or unbalanced mind.  Although modern science has disproved this, there is still some truth in the Aryuvedic approach.  However, science just does not have all the answers and doesn’t work for everyone.

Health is a three way balance of genetics, environment and state of mind.  Most often genetics and environment are out of our control.

•    Ultimately the only thing we can control is our state of mind and the toxins we put into it, through what we eat.

If you take responsibility for your own health through preventative means, then ultimately you don’t place a burden on the people you love such as your family, relatives and society in general.  Taking care is the rule here.

Sustainable Health is:
•    A preventative approach

•    A balance of mind, body and spirit

•    Taking care of what we put into our bodies

•    Taking natural medicines to maintaining your health and hopefully preventing illnesses before they take shape.

•    Leading and maintaining a balanced life, by taking a “middle road” approach.  Not too little, not too much is the key.

What are its aims?
•    Taking responsible for one’s own health, through a proactive approach rather than a reactive approach.

Current Approach

Most doctors fail to realize this because they and the industry work on reactive approach, and they are trained to think in a reactive approach.  In western civilization this is how doctors make a living and pharmaceutical companies thrive.

•    In ancient China, the opposite was true.  If a patient was sick, then the doctor was fined for failing his or her duty.

•    Today we are ruled by pharmaceutical companies and health insurance companies, using a fear approach.

•    Nearly all reactive medicines have side effects, just ask any G.P.  Some have even been well documented by researchers and doctors.

Point in example is the arthritis pill Vioxx, which has reportedly killed over 100,000 people in the U.S since its introduction, and over 300 people in Australia.  Vioxx relieves pain of arthritis but triggers heart attacks and strokes.

•    How many other medicines are there like that?

Sustainable Health Principles
•    Your health is fundamentally directly related to your mental condition and toxins we put into our bodies, through what we eat, drink and breathe.
•    Chronic and terminal illnesses doesn’t just happen. They happen for a reason. A sure sign that you and your body may be out of balance or “sync” with your environment.

The 10 principles of Sustainable Health:
1.    Maintain a balanced life, (middle road approach)
2.    Have a healthy diet
3.    Exercise regularly
4.    Sleep well
5.    Maintain a regular rhythm in life.
6.    Take preventative natural medicines to maintain health
7.    Engage in spiritual practices manifested through meditation, mind training and raising personal consciousness
8.    Learn to live and laugh more
9.    Building discipline in our selves through mind training and raising awareness
10.    Take a simpler approach to life

•    The result of this will reduce your stress level and the impact of stress upon your health and body.

Balanced life
What is a balanced life?  A balanced life means being in control of all aspects of our life, such as:
1.    Physical
2.    Mental
3.    Spiritual
4.    Family
5.    Financial
6.    Work and Career
7.    Social

It also means not to live to excesses, because we become attached to them.  When we become attached to them, we lose empowerment and they take over and control us.  Point in example is TV, drugs and gambling.

Preventative Medicines
•    Tribal societies have long known about preventative, which we are only starting to realise now.
•    Daily doses of preventative medicine may help you and boost your immune system.
What are natural preventive medicines?  Thinks like herbs, tonics, foods and drinks.  Things like fresh fruit or plants like St.Johns Wort, Aloe Vera or Mangosteen, just to name a few.

Spiritual Practices
Why do we need to maintain a spiritual approach?  What if I am an atheist or don’t believe in God?
•    Being spiritual doesn’t necessary mean believing in God.  Believing in oneself is far more important.  In essence you have God within, but most people fail to realise and acknowledge it.

Sleep
What is the importance of sleep?  Why is it so beneficial?
Hazrat Khan a famous Sufi teacher, lecturer, writer, and musician from India has described sleep as “food for the soul”.  Rumi another famous Sufi poet says in one of his poems, “O sleep, every night thou freest the prisoner from his bonds.”
“The prisoner when he is asleep does not know that he is in prison; he is free. The wretched is not wretched; he is contended.  The suffering have no more pain and misery.”
•    Sleep frees and rests our mind, and ultimately our soul.

Being happy
Studies have shown that happy people are also healthier people.  Happiness is simply a state of mind.  Being happy truly comes when we are in control of our own thoughts and actions.
•    How can one be happy in the modern world with all the tragedies, violence and terrorism?
One must remember that it’s not what happens to us that counts (because most often it is out of our control), but how we deal with it.  We can control how we react to it.  We have a choice.  The choice is to react to it in a negative way or positive way.
If we have a defeatist, negative attitude then we lose our empowerment.  If we take a positive, courageous attitude, then we can be empowered.

•    How is it that after the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004, children can still laugh and play and carry on with their day to day activities?
The universe tells us that nature of life is to go on and the carrier of life is hope.

•    Perhaps we can take a lesson from these unfortunate people, to free our minds up, because we often find that we are prisoners of our own devices attached to comforts and material possessions we don’t really need driven by our insecurities and status anxiety.  These insecurities are manifested through modern day media which is driven by society’s capitalistic ideals.

The Sustainable Path

Natural and alternative health and lifestyle products can really benefit you and your family.

Did you know that the industry in health foods and natural products in their retail and business opportunity form have increased by 75% in the last 5 years alone?

This article has a few simple answers to why the natural more healthy alternatives can deliver much greater health benefits than just going and getting some vitamins from your local drug store.

Many elements and chemicals that help our body function and boost our immune system can only be found in a “stable” form in the foods and drinks that occur naturally. By taking these natural chemicals from their natural states and trying to “bottle” it is virtually impossible without the use of further adding dangerous additives and manmade chemicals.

Furthermore, the organic industry, which seems so new, is coming back after about 50 years of “conventional” farming to boost the sustainability and production needed in agriculture.

For some reason people think that organics has never existed before and it was only about 50 years ago that we didn’t have pesticides, fertilisers and herbicides and relied purely on the co-dependant relationships of ecosystems.

People again are realising the benefits of organics only after 50 years of cancer causing chemicals being passed along in our food. It is strange as many people who have had the initial stages of cancer have converted to organics for added support to their immune systems.

From organics to sustainable lifestyles which includes our complete environment from building to water to energy production to health… everything is a dynamic system and will become increasingly important as global warming becomes more of a problem.

This leads me onto the next step, sustainable building. Did you know that your home can become a toxic and uncomfortable environment for you and your family if you don’t think consciously about the types of products you use within and around your house?

Many insulation and cabinet maker products use materials that contain a vast amount of formaldehyde which is a very toxic and carcinogenic chemical. Paints and finishes can contain high levels of VOC (volatile organic compounds) which have been proven to cause serious health issues and lead to “sick house syndrome”. Building material used for the structure of your home can be cheap and cause the temperature in your home to be very uncomfortable and the air conditioner you use to make up for this costs you hundreds of dollars every year.

Might as well give up hey? No way…

There are so many resources and products available at your request that can dramatically change the negative aspects and will improve your overall wellbeing aswell as your families, whilst at the same time improve the quality of products that are good for the environment also. For instance, there are many paint companies with low to zero VOC products, insulation has been developed using cellulose (recycled paper basically) with no formaldehyde, energy efficient air conditioners exist and many products that are affordable but have the qualities to increase the comfort of your home.

The main point is… If you buy for the health and comfort of you and your family, the results will be beneficial to both you and the environment. This is what I mean by a dynamic system. Sustainability isn’t about knowing everything about what does what and where it goes, it is simply about working with your local environment to produce the best possible outcome that WILL save you money, your health and the environment.

I suggest you start to educate yourself in the simple parts of sustainability and even if you save a litre of water a year or have an organic meal at least once every 2 months, you will be on your way to sustainability.

Sustainable Office Design Seminar Launched

Office transformation specialist Morgan Lovell has organised a seminar designed to inspire business leaders to ‘go green.’

The company is inviting property, facilities and business managers to its own headquarters in Noel Street, London, to show how a traditional 1960s office building can be transformed for the 21st Century.

‘Sustainable Office Design and Fit Out: A Case Study’ takes place on Wednesday, May 14.

The seminar is designed for businesses faced with incorporating sustainability into office design and fit out projects or who are uncertain about how to meet the challenge of ‘green’ regulations and standards.

Morgan Lovell is using its own headquarters as a real-life case study after carrying-out its own recent refurbishment.

Work at the Noel Street office achieved the highest BREEAM environmental assessment score in the UK to date. The project was one of just two of its kind in the country to achieve an “Excellent” rating from assessors.

Delegates at the seminar will be given the opportunity to tour the site to assess the effectiveness of the environmentally friendly products used in the refurbishment and explore the costs and the payback times.

The step-by-step seminar will also explore how to build sustainability into office design, significantly reduce future energy bills through sustainability; meet Government targets and get a high BREEAM rating as well as making the project carbon neutral.

Andrew Bradley, managing director of Morgan Lovell, said: “The seminar will be packed with good advice for anyone overseeing an office design, office fit out or office refurbishment, or anyone responsible for sustainability or the reduction of energy bills.

“The event also gives a unique opportunity to see how the theory was put into practice by Morgan Lovell on the company’s own office fit out

Two sessions are being held in the morning and afternoon. The early session is fully booked but places are available on the later event which runs from 2pm to 4.15pm.

Places can be booked by visiting http://www.morganlovell.com/events or by telephoning 01462 490 609.
